...We often believe what we know is not true because, if we did not believe it, we would be compelled to change our behavior, relinquish our false beliefs, and forgo benefits to which we have become accustomed. Asked whether he believed President Clinton's January 1998 declaration that he did not have sex with Monica Lewinsky, Erskine B. Bowles, then White House chief of staff, offered this candid reply: "If I didn't believe him, I couldn't stay. So I believed him." People often attribute suicide to depression for the same reason.
